The only disadvantage to using 20# (and the same applies to GSP) is an
increased chance of buried wraps. If you get a pile of backing out while
fighting a large fish, and then retrieve it under heavy tension (most of
us are paying more attention to the fish at that point than ensuring the
backing goes back on the spool "perfectly"), on the next long run a
buried wrap may end the fight prematurely. That said, it really depends
on the conditions under which you fish. Clearly, if being spooled is a
real possibility, the thinner backing is preferable. I can't recall
anyone telling me they lost a fish because the 20# backing broke
(spooled yes, knot failure yes). Cheers,
