20 pound is what I use also.  It is plenty for steelhead & salmon.  I have had fish spool me using 30 but never 20.  You might want to give the gel spun backing a try.  High test small dia.

Subject: Re: [VFB] Steelhead and backing question

   KEN,

Back Years ago I always put 30 lb. test backing on my 8wts. I figured I'm after Steelhead & Salmon and that's what i should use. Howver, Lately(the past 5 years) I have been reverting back to using 20 lb. test backing on my 8wts. the Reason???, I know 20lb. is more then enough,(even if you vist "Your" Skeena River drainage & it's population of the Biggest Steelhead in the World) & I get more yardage on there, always a handy thing when you consider what Steelhead are capable of doing. I've caught 25 lb. King Salmon in the Yuba River with 20 Lb. test backing & never worried when the line was gone and the Backing was flying off the reel. My 9 & 10 wt. set ups are the only ones I have 30 lb. test backing on; and I'm seriously thinking of reloading the 9wt. with 20 Lb. test backing when I have to replace the backing... My $0.02 on the subject. By the by, what patterns are you thinking of using for BC winter Steelies??? I have some recommendations that seem to always work for me.

Here's a question for anyone who fishes for steelhead.

I recently purchased a new 8 wt rod, reel and a multi tip 8 wt line to go
with it.

I'm hoping to do some steelhead fishing this winter and I'll also use it for
salmon and saltwater fishing.

Here's my question....

Should I use 30 pound or 20 pound backing.

I would think that 20 pound would be enough -- however, I've already got
some 30 pound backing that came with another reel I purchased a year or so
ago.

Is 30 pound overkill?

Thanks for all your help.
