You don't need to go nearly as far as Alaska!
There are plenty of places in rural Oklahoma and deep East Texas where folks still retain their pride and subsist pretty much off what they can harvest from the land.

What you mean to say is no one you know needs to hunt or fish for food.  In rural Alaska and parts of the west, it is still very much a way of life.
