John, I have been tying my own leaders for some years now. It is the only leader I fish. The advantage is that when my leader breaks, I can repair it. If a section gets nicked, I can replace it. Plus the satisfaction of fishing my own leader.
I have greatly benefitted by two tips. 1. I have a micrometer - given to me by a gun enthusiast who loads his own shells. I use that micrometer to measure the diameter of the leader material. That way, I know precisely what to add according to a formula. [There are some very good leader formulas available online. I can find those and let you know where they are] 2. I was shown a very neat and quick way to tie a blood knot - without a tool. My opinion - I wouldn't have it any other way. I am not talking about furled or braided leaders, just tying different size line together? I was thinking about getting the umpqua leader building kit, or just buying spools of the sizes I need. If you just buy the sizes like say I want to buy .021 for a butt section, do I still just buy leader/tippet material or am i gettign into a different leader material? > > john ridderbos > > >
