The whole is a fly or not issue has been debated on every list or
board I've been on as well as at some of the shows I've tyed at. A fly
is a fly right? Well, not an easy answer to that one.
Everybody KNOWS what a fly is... It's "only feathers or fur that is
attached to the hook with silk thread." All natural stuff. Except for
that silver tinsel ribbing. That's still a real fly. Well there are
there are those metal hourglass eyes on the Clousers, but that it. Maybe
a little crystal flash would still make it ok to be defined as a fly.
And that hares' ear just HAS to have the wire rib, but it's still a fly.
The Kevlar thread is ok though because it's only used to hold down the
spun deer hair.
On the other hand, maybe real flys are only things that imitate
something your particular quarry thinks is food. I think I'll have to
agree with Mr. Ordes that it is up to each of us to personally define
just what is and isn't a fly.

(heck of a way to say "Yup, what he said!)

Subject: Re: [VFB] Prop Flys & blades

I've seen the propellers and spinner blades on many patterns, even
commercial ones. Feelings are mixed, and it's up to one's own feelings
if
they want to use them. I have two propeller deceiver flies from Pete
Parker
that he says are killer on baracuda. I've never tied with them myself-
I
get more satisfaction knowing my fly caught the fish rather than a shiny
blade that I had nothing to do with, but that's personal. I've seen one
pattern that is a blade tail, 3 pearl beads, and a propeller up front.
It's
tied, but is it a fly? Up to the fisherman.

My .00002 cents
DonO
