For what it's worth. I have a St. Croix with single foot guides that I use heavily during steelhead season. I've owned it for 4 years and have had no problems until last season. I use a looped leader system with up to 12 ft of leader and tippett. Last year the knot on the leader loop caught on the second to top guide and the guide pulled right out of it's wrapping. I didn't lose it because it was dangling on the leader and so was able to reattach it sucessfully. The guide feet point towards the butt of the rod and the force of the knot upwards disloged the guide. As a result of this experience I am using regular snake guides on the 7wt I am building. Doesn't look as cool but the double wrapping makes me feel more confident that things will stay put since any force will always be pulling towards a wrapping no matter which direction the force is applied.
