I see two common types of failure.  the first is the ceramic ring falls out, the second is the foot breaks.  About equal occurence of both.  I've used both chrome plated salt-water rated and TiN and have had no problems with either really.  I'd probably opt for the TiN if I was building a rod for freshwater with occasional saltwater usage.  If your going to do that, remember to completely clean your reel after each outing in the saltwater.
