Jimmy,
Bois D'arc is the same thing as the osage orange that Tony mentioned.  We
also call it hedge or ironwood.  It produces bright green "fruits" that are
about 4-5 inches in diameter.  I think it is the same wood you are talking
about.  I know from experience that it will dull a blade on a lathe chisel
quicker than about anything.  The wood is a brilliant yellow when first cut
but oxidizes to a dullish brown color if not protected.
