We also call it BoDock, or Horse Apple the correct name is Osage Orange, see below.
I have made a good number of reelseat inserts from it.
There is a lot of BoDock trees growing along Crooked Creek. In late fall when I fish Crooked Creek
I am always startled by a big splash on the creek. I used to think it was a large bass taking on top. As it turned out, it is a Horse Apple dropping from a tree and hitting the water.

Tony, have you ever tried Bois D'arc for reel seats. You probably like me here in Texas, call it BO DOCK, (the horse apple tree). Anyway, for those not familier, Bo Dock is a very hard wood and is yellowish and stripped. I used to use it in making custom Recurve Hunting Bows. Very decorative.

I look for red cedar that has a knot or a burl. It also makes beautiful reel seats. The knots polish up to a real high gloss.
If you do make it here for the Sowbug, I have some I can spare. Osage orange is another good wood to use for reel seats.
As long as we are talking Sowbug, all the VFB members that are coming, please contact me OFF LIST, OFF LIST, OFF LIST.
