Rubber is not out!  Today's mono is stronger than that of old, but it still curls. Pre-stretched or not, If you want to use part of an innertube, (hard to find these days), by all means, do so. All you need do is wet the rubber and there'll be less friction. (The heat generated is what straightens the mono out when you pull it through.) Anything you use to slide the mono through is going to generate heat.  I've used rubber for many years, and yes, I have a supply - innertubes from my old 8-N Ford tractor. Another method I use is to pinch the mono between my thumb and middle finger and pull the mono across my thumbnail.  This works well to as I'm sure many other ideas will.

Today I wouldn't use rubber to straighten a leader. This generates heat,
the enemy of mono, and in these days of high-strength (often means
pre-stretched) mono that can lower breaking strengths considerably.
Cheers,
Paul
