Jimmy, rubber is OUT. Pre-stretched mono has a higher breaking strength,
but it has little stretch and so is very susceptible to anything that
can weaken it, such as friction heat or minor abrasion. The way to
straighten mono, as recommended for years by the manufacturers, is to
pull it between your hands.
Of course if you use 40# test for leaders, do whatever turns you on!
Perhaps, as a Canadian, I don't have a sufficient reputation to warrant
belief, so I'll quote an American guru, Lefty Kreh;
"Also, never use rubber or a similar material to remove coils from a
leader. This will cause small ruptures in the leader that will easily
break."
