Don O I beg to differ. I recall a situation last winter, when a young VFB member Joshua Barnett who had a signature that included Editor, The Modern Angler Tier and the Back Porch Fly Company who made a comment or seemingly (to me) harmless remark and none other than our late friend Murph jumped all over him. I and several other VFB members e-mailed Murph off list with words to the effect that his comments were not in the spirit of VFB and out of place. To give him credit, Murph apologized publicly via VFB to Joshua but by that time Joshua was already gone - never to return. Now, I respected Murph and tied a fly in his honor when he passed away. The point is we all make mistakes. This is just one example.
With regard to your questions, I don't think that there is a conclusive answer to any of them. Many times, different fly tiers in different countries come up with the same or very similar discoveries and techniques. Some make claims that they have innovated, invented or discovered the technique and some don't. I've already made my feelings known in the past about givers and takers. Nothing has changed. THe VFB is great when a lot of listers are 'givers'. Quit giving, and the list goes dead, like it was when the 'GOB diatribes' started. If ya git bored, start a thread or a swap. Start a materials swap. Find some neat materials and give it away to other listers. There's lots of ways to make the vfb pleasant. Study up an a new topic and share the information. Post fishing reports- I love the photos part. Search the web and post neat url's. Staying on topic is easy if topics are generated. I loved the fish-cam series. I stayed out of the "who's the best' discussion for personal reasons- competitions are NOT my thing. I would much rather a thread named "Notable Contributions to Tying". Many times the credit for techniques goes unrecognized or given erroneously to others. Sometimes it's a pattern, and sometimes it's a technique. I have a list of questions I would like answers to: Who tied the first 'dry fly' ?- intentionally to stay afloat. Who tied the first hair-wing flies? Who tied the first streamer fly? Who was the first to spin deer hair? Who was the first to wind a hackle collar? Whoever did these things are noteable contributors to tying, because so much was built on want they innovated.
