Chuck ,I wonder if your leader is damage . Tippet material does soak up water and this on going getting wet and drying out causes some damage . Another if the sun gets on the leader as attach to the outside of your vest ,this also causes damage. Also adding a knot I figure 25 % less breaking strength. When tying a knot some knots shear easy compare to others . Then if you have a nick in the leader ,that dent decrease the leader size and create a fracture . In the old days I sure lose allot of beautiful trout because of kicks. Always checking for damage while fishing. Sometimes closing a knot to tight thus stretching a leader into a smaller diameter causes breaking. It's winter time and in the beginning I would take two pencils or long nails and place them inside the hook and test the knots and even two different knots to see which know has the best breaking strength.,or the leader wrap at each end and pull on the tippet material or a knot in the middle. So Chuck ,take a pick.... Glenn Overton ----- Original Message ----- From: Chuck Alexander To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 10:52 PM Subject: [VFB] Tippet Material Question
Folks: We have been talking about tippet material, and I have a question... I have a roll of Orvis 6X 3.5 pound test .005 diameter tippet.. It "rolls over" well for me, but when I take a piece and pull, it just is soo small, it snaps with very little power to break it. I know that fish "weigh" a lot less in water, than if you were pulling them in on land. But, does anybody lose a lot of fish with this small (6X) tippet??? or Not?? I have just started using a 4 pound "mono" line, that is much harder to break, but does NOT "turn over" as easy, at least not for me it don't.. Thanks in advance, Chuck
