Chuck,
Red Tag:
Hook: Std. Nymph Hook 12-16
Thread: Brown
Tail: Red floss or wool (I use Micro Glo-bug yarn)
Body: Peacock Herl
Hackle: Furnace (I use brownish-red)
Head: Thread
I've been using a Treacle Parkin which is nothing more than a Red Tag
with an orange yarn (again, glo-bug yarn) tail. There's a DAMBUSTER
that uses the exact same pattern, just a streamer hook. All 3 are
producers, it just depends on what hook you have laying around at the time.
I haven't tried the Gill patterns - there are several that I keep
wanting to try, but haven't gotten around to it. The past two years
all I have been using is a 12-16 BH Caddis. Usually in Blue Dun
w/red thread. I've tied a similar Gill Getter - just haven't taken
it off the bench yet.
Good Luck this year!

about that Red Tag.. Is that a marabou tail?? Peacock herl body??
and a brown hen hackle???
Also, I was catching most of my bluegills on Yellow flies this year,
but went out fishing with my wife yesterday (Monday, as Tuesday I
had to go get the bi monthly Spinal Epidural shots in my lower
back).. Anyway, I caught at least 20 Bluegills and one decent
largemouth bass on the following.. A Gill Getter using a #8 hook
that had a brown squirrel's tail tail (only about 1/4" long).. a
Fluorescent Chartreuse chenille body, brown rubber legs and a red
thread head.. I then took several wraps of copper that is painted
red, and about 33 gauge I guess, and wrapped it several turns around
the "waist" of the Fly, right where you tie in the legs.. HTH, Chuck

Subject: [VFB] fishing report
Howdy Listers,
Below is what I posted on my MySpace Blog. Third time out fishing,
same fly rod, same fly, still lots of bluegill, still a big smile
on my face. I think they only thing I've done since I've been
fishing last Friday has been to replace the tippet that came with
the leader I bought and put a straight piece of 5x on instead. I
have a big wind-knot in the braided tapered leader, but I haven't
done much with it other than pull it tight. It seems very up to the
task of landing bluegill all day long and I don't think it's going
to see fish much bigger than what I'm catching now. I'm thinking
of hitting it with some glue, then trimming the stuck loops off. If
you're wondering the fly, it's a Treacle Parkin - a Red Tag with an
orange tail instead of red.
Any questions? Comments? Idears?

Happy Tuesday All!! As most of you know, Tuesdays are the days I
get my oldest daugther after work/school. It was such a nice day
today that I couldn't pass up a walk around the park at the very
least. Burrell Lake Park was the closest park that had a path the
whole way around the lake as well as a small playground for the
girls, as I knew they would want to play some too. During the
walk around the lake, I had spotted a few places where I could see
some bluegill coming to the surface and then fading back into the
murky waters. On the far side of the lake we ran into some
teenagers fishing as well, my oldest decided to tell them where we
had found the fish. I had hoped we would be able to fish them
ourselfs, but I knew the kids heard her and would go looking to
see what she was saying was true. We finished walking around the
lake and went to The Exploder and picked up my fishing gear. As
we walked back towards the spot, I could see the last of the boys
walking towards where I had spotted the most of the bluegill
hanging around and as we rounded the bend in the shore, I could
see that the other guys were already there. Luckily, they had
left us a spot where I could get close enough and the girls had a
place to sit. I was able to flip one of the two rods with out
much problem, but it was too tight for two of us to fish. So I
hooked them and the girls got to reel them in. We caught three
bluegill in quick succession. The other guys where stunned and
couldn't believe it. The one kid that was using worms or parts of
them was also getting nibbles, but I'm pretty sure his hook was
too big for the fish he was feeding. I watched him land one and
hook up with two more. Fish four through seven weren't as easy to
hook up with, they took alittle longer to entice with my fly, but
the other guys were getting discouraged with our success while
they were coming up short. Both girls started to want to touch
the fish and put them back in the water. I started working with
the oldest in taking the fish off the hook. By the end of our
short trip, Sarra was able to land a bluegill and take it off the
hook and put it back in the water. Kaity was taking a fish,
giving it a Jimmy Houston kiss (tm), and tossing it back in
herself. They made Daddy really proud today and it didn't hurt
that we outfished 3 times our number with just 1 fly rod and we
quit because it got too easy.
