Pete,
Count steelhead in on that species list.

Really? What size do you use for steelhead? I've had limited
exposure to them, and what little I've found (holdovers from
stockings of MANY many years past, on the Lehigh River proper in
eastern PA) are the type that prefer much larger (usually spey or
large streamer) flies. Again, I've had little exposure to
steelheads, and when I fish for them, I usually use a 2-handed (so-
called "spey") rod... so I'm obviously limited in experience.
Off to work again... This weekend is scheduled as "off work" time,
so I hope to get on the water at some point! Somehow the week seems
so much better when i think of that!
Tight lines,
Pete
Yeah, we use 10's or so for PA Erie steelhead. Most of the
fish up there can get hammered and wise up. I know of people using
16's and 2lb flouro. A good portion of the spin-fisherman up there
use long noodle rods made famous by John Nagy. I use a 10' 7wt and
use 5x flouro on tough days. Most of the flys I use are in the 10-14
range, some bigger, I don't like to tie smaller. Since Steelhead
are similar to trout, I tend to use the same flys that I use for
trout season - it makes sorting flys a lot easier! Also, the
steelhead streams in Erie are fairly small, so there's not a lot of
need for distance casting, just managing the line
Good luck on the weekend off work. It's going to be cold in
this corner of PA, so fishing's w/the kids is pretty much out of the question..
