Hi Gang,
Just a note to let you know that I'm alive and doing fairly well even
though I haven't been posting much lately. Got me a new toy last week -
a Lowrance H2O GPS receiver. That thing is truly amazing. I quickly
put it into action recovering my personal "hotspots" for crappie on Lake
Waco. The Corps raised the lake level 7 feet a couple years ago and all
my crappie hotspots, (brushpiles) are now 40 - 50 feet off shore.
A few years ago a friend of mine got a bunch of christmas trees from the
Waco recycle folks right after Christmas and hauled them out to the
lake, transferred them to his bass boat and placed them just off shore
of several "key" lake points that had been productive crappie producers
over the years. He tied several trees together and weighed them down
with a concrete block and tossed them in, moving on to the next point.
Viola, instant crappie cover.
Now, with my Lowrance H2O, I'm re-locating the brush piles and recording
the GPS coordinates. The old crappie hotspots. (brushpiles), will be
much easier to find now. We fish the brushpiles vertically with crappie
jigs and soft minnow imitations, curly tail grubs, Crappie Specials,
etc. Interesting thing is that occassionally, I catch a largemouth bass
off a brushpile. They also lurk around them. My next GPS deal will be
marking under water humps, channels, and other structure, i.e. hotspots
for my bass fishing. Also, I'm using my Lowrance to double check hotspot
coordinates for the monthly Hotspots of Texas report that I do for Texas
Fish & Game magazine.
Before you make any comments, yes, I still chunk & wind for bass and for
brushpile crappie, I use a "Pack's Pole", a long telescoping fiberglass
pole invented by local crappie geru, Charley Pack. No sense in fooling
around for bass or crappie with a fly rod. I save them for my trout trips.
Tight Lines,
JIMMY D
