That's never been my experience.

I compressed some files to compare. Windows Movie Maker didn't give
me many options so I went with the 768kbps, 320 X 240 30fps preset.
Windows Media Player says it's 705kbps when it's playing back which
pretty much meshes with the math (it's 1.3MB).

So I created two quicktime movies to match as closely as I could.
The first is one encoded with 3ivx. It's 320 X 240, 30 fps, 759kps
(1.37MB)

The other is encoded with H.264. Again it's 320 X 240, 30fps, 679kps
(1.22MB)

Clearly the H.264 video is the best, the 3ivx video is second best,
and the wmv is lowest quality. We can certainly do more comparisons
at other (lower?) bit rates. I've also posted the source video.
It's DV shot on a one-chip Digital 8 camera. It's in an avi wrapper
so it will work on both a mac and a pc. If someone with a PC and
more wmv encoding option would like to compress some samples, I'll
make 3ivx and H.264 versions using the same frame size, fps, and bit
rate.

All three of these files are perfectly acceptable for videoblogs.
Many people (casual viewers - not people who scrutinize video all
day) would have trouble telling the difference between them. I just
don't see how you can say that a 3ivx quicktime file at the same size
as a wmv file is far far worse.
