Maureen, I couldn't speak to the position that it takes longer to do it your current way (PN1995.9, and then by genre), but I will say that our feature films are cataloged primarily as PN1997, then arranged essentially in alpha order by title (title of *origin,* of course, so that The Bicycle Thief is at PN1997.L23... for Ladri di biciclette). Our video cataloger is quick and hasn't complained about this setup. J

They claim they could catalog more quickly if they began using some other PN number, then organizing them by director or by title. Is this true? I am not a cataloger. Obviously. Do other academic libraries use LOC to catalog their DVDs? If so, do you use PN 1995.9, or something else? VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
