We have a slightly different approach. Ages ago we moved from Dewey to LC classification for all our media. When it came to the feature films, the cataloger met with me to determine what might be the best, given our collection is in open stacks and heavily browsed. We ended up using PN1993.5 (and now .6) and dividing it further to country of origin so that all the US, German, French, Turkish, etc. films were grouped together. Then they are Cuttered by title. I realize the class number is 'bending the rules' a bit, but it has worked really well for our patrons. Which is good, since the decision was based upon their patterns of use. Since all the media materials get full level cataloging, subject and genre get covered that way.
Documentaries are classed by their specific subject, and television programs/series are classed as PN1992.3 and then their country code. We don't have a lot of them, but the ones we do have include series from Israel, France, the US and more. They claim they could catalog more quickly if they began using some other PN number, then organizing them by director or by title. Is this true? I am not a cataloger. Obviously. Do other academic libraries use LOC to catalog their DVDs? If so, do you use PN 1995.9, or something else? VIDEOLIB is intended to encourage the broad and lively discussion of issues relating to the selection, evaluation, acquisition, bibliographic control, preservation, and use of current and evolving video formats in libraries and related institutions. It is hoped that the list will serve as an effective working tool for video librarians, as well as a channel of communication between libraries, educational institutions, and video producers and distributors.
