Hi Viking team,

Just wanted to tell you that Viking has been a great help for me. I used
it for planning a bicycle trip in tuscany. Unfortunately, coverage by
openstreetmaps is still lacking there.

My only hope to plan the tracks was to scan the (1:100000) map provided
with the pre-information by the organizer. I did not know of any way to
convert locations in the scanned image to lat/lon though, so I decided to
try to extend Viking to do just this.

I ended up spending about 4 hours to add the feature I needed (albeit in
rudimentary form). It adds a new "image" layer type. The properties
of that layer consist of the image path, a x/y pixel location in the
upper left and the lat/lon of that pixel and the same for some pixel in
the lower right of the image.

With that information, the image is scaled to match the two points on
display. Of course this is a coarse approximation, but it turned out
to be good enough. The accurary of the track points I created in this
way was about 200 m.

Perhaps it could be worthwhile to improve on my code and include this
feature into Viking proper. I put up a screenshot and links to the
git repository on

Friendly, Torsten
