Hi Mathieu, There was a long (and forgotten, as I'm concerned) debate around your patch. Quy explained his point of view. I was not able to apply it (no time and hoping for the Quy's version of the solution).
But things changed: I applied a patch from Jocelyn doing similar things for Map layers. So I think it is time to apply your patch. But Jocelyn found a good compromise (IMHO): use interpolation only for two or three levels of zoom. Can you modify your patch in this way? Furthermore, perhaps is there some code to share between Jocelyn's patch and yours, at least on the value of the "zoom distance"?
