Interesting (bad) news: viking has a "Direction" feature based on
Google. I imagine this feature no more works.

To solve the issue, many solutions can be imagined.

First one: implement one of the workaround, based on JSON/XML format
provided by Google. But we have to choose the right one, the most
durable API. Can someone invest on the links provided above? Ideally,
a format processed by gpsbabel would be really really nice.

Second one: we extend the "Direction" feature in order to allow other
routing service.
(It is a long living task on my todo list)

Third one: extend the "Direction" feature to allow complex routing computation.
I'm thinking about the following use case:
- the user draw a simple track inside viking, with enought trackpoints
to affect the routing engine (2, 3, more?)
- the user right-click this new track and select a (new) entry to
reclaim a computed route
- the selected track is used by viking to compute the parameters for
the routing engine, submit the request and display the result as a new
track
