The way you put it already places Vim in an inferior position w.r.t.
Emacs. As if something must be done to catch up with Emacs.
I see the power of Vim not in the availability of many plug-ins that
one could add to it, nor even in the fact that it is easy for most
people to write their own plug-ins. The power that I value lies in
the economy of editing labour that the plain Vim makes possible in my
everyday work. Vim does such a great job precisely in manipulating text.
Being able to run a debugger, or view LaTeX's output etc., all within
the editor, which is Emacs's strength, is of little value to me. Emacs
is nowhere near Vim in terms of editing power. No other editor is.
I am saying all this because I believe many other Vim users share
the same attitude. The point being that, if one likes doing things
the way they can be done with Vim, (s)he will stay with Vim regardless
of whether a plug-in for some particular task is present or even
possible.
