I think it's quite possible to get a lot done with a Classic-level machine. I've used mine for quite a bit successfully, with only "modern" web browsing really being the hole. I do cheat a bit for some chatting and telnet to my Linux box for IRC, but otherwise I do everything else "native". However, if you're really wanting to go retro, I might recommend getting something like a Macintosh SE FDHD. Having a directly installed and operating ethernet card is a huge advantage over the Classic's options (SCSI->Ethernet or Localtalk Bridge through another Mac). It'd have pretty much the same performance and capability as the Classic; the only thing you'd really be losing would be the ROM boot disk. An SE/30 would also be a drastic improvement, if not quite so Lean. As for the "supersizing for no good reason", that's something of a good question and subject to personal preference. Up to a point, faster and more capable machines are definitely better than an 8mhz Mac with a tiny black and white screen. At what point more speed, colors, and screen size is "enough" is a matter of personal preference (and patience) Scott Scott --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are a member of the Vintage Macs group.
