For networking with other Macs via Apple's proprietary AppleTalk protocol.
the serial to Ethernet adapters enable connecting to a standard Ethernet LAN 
without needing a network card designed specifically for that computer.

It's still only as fast as the serial port, but you can use any serial 
communications software without it having to be written to use TCP/IP or other 
protocols the adapter supports.
