I finally found a long shaft driver to open the case on my Plus and Classic

You need some sort of case spreader - the case fit is tight on all of the compact macs. There were official tools for that but I've had success with a 2" putty knife and a bit of care. Insert in the joint and twist carefully. Usually seemed to work best to start near the bottom of the computer and work up toward the top, IIRC - it's been a while since I've had a compact out in service.

Others recommend a cheap spring clamp from the hardware store - with the rubber tips removed the metal edges fit in the joint nicely. It's a little more user-friendly and less likely to ding up the edges around the joint.

Also make sure you remove the reset/interrupt switch before opening - I've broken more than one of them by yanking the case apart.

Some of my compact macs also would come apart if I held them by only the rear case, face down, over a soft surface (like a pillow) and shook them vertically. YMMV with that technique, I think the ease of removal was more an indication of how many times I'd taken them apart than anything else...
