lets solve this problem.
doug;
if you have not got the plus to boot.
I have two(2) 800k disks.
one has a system 6.0.8 on it and boots o.k. on my SE....
second one has a patched HD SC setup program thats works fine under system
6.0.8
send me you address off line and I will send you the two disks..
side note:
did you ever boot from the external disk on the classic??
you might want to check on the external disk if the system folder has been
'blessed'
(a icon in the middle of the system folder icon..)

A disk image file is like a special type of archive, containing all the data
from a disk.
You can't just copy the image to the disk, you must use Apple DiskCopy to
write the contents of the image file to the floppy.
For 400K and 800K images, DiskCopy 4.2 usually works better. For 1.44M
images, use DiskCopy 6.3.3

The old System disks you download from Apple are disk
images. On OS 9 and
older you use Apple DiskCopy to write the images to the
floppies.
