Just a guess but it sounds like it may be suffering from stiction. I've had 2 drive do this on me now (both in an 840av and on an external so it wasn't a PSU issue, I made sure of that), one of which was a 7200rpm 4GB Micropolis AV drive, a bit gauling (did exactly what Jeff G. said his Miniscribe did) in that it sat and burped and squeaked and then flashed the LED at me. The other drive i tried was a Quantum that had beein in storage for about 8 years and it just flashed. One common denominator I noticed was that the power circuits on the drive get *very* hot if a drive has stiction as the drive is overloading the on-board power circuit trying to spin the disk.
