Hold the drive in one hand by the long sides then gently whack the end of the case so that you're trying to rotate it around the axis of the platters. You should be able to see which end of the drive the platters are at, the bottom of the motor is usually visible on the bottom of the drive along the centerline. There's another pivot that's always offset to one side. That's where the heads pivot.
