That's all well and good, and I agree, but a lot of businesses use the
suppliers I listed the order numbers for meaning people could
potentially save a lot of money (mostly VAT) buying them through work.
CPC especially, and their parent company, Farnell or their major
competitor Radios Spares (or RS Components as the prefer to be known)
are used by practically anywhere that buys electronics kit on a small
to medium scale.

So ya see I'm not daft. It is much easier to walk into Maplin and say I
want a QE49D than walk in with a PRAM battery and say 'have you got
another one of these'. It's not even usually enough to have a
manufacturers part number. A quirk of business is that the less awkward
the customer is the better they get treated, and it works exponentially.

I did the 'have you got another one of these' trick in Maplin in
Southampton once, as pickle well knows, and was given the wrong one by
an particularly dumb member of staff. I took it back and was rapidly
given the correct one by the manager however.

People like easy customers. So if you ring a company, or walk in the
door, and say I need a 'so and so' it's part number 'xyz123' then you
get treated a lot better. If you KEEP going in and doing the same you
get a really good reputation and sterling service :)
