Your beige G3 is going to come in handy: it has a floppy disk drive :)
You can download diskimages of bootable System 6 and 7 at various
locations on the web. The IIci will boot 6.0.8 and later (on up to
early MacOS 8 if I remember correctly). Find one and use Disk Copy
to create an actual disk from the diskimage, and then see if your
IIci will boot from it.
It should NORMALLY chime but it may have the volume set to "mute" or "0".
If you have external bootable SCSI media, the IIci can boot from that as well.

The IIci does not chime when I turn it on at the keyboard. The
lights come on, I can hear hard drive activity, but no chime.
Should it chime? What can I do to try and get it to boot? Any
useful help is always appreciated. Why do I want this Mac up and
running? I like working with older hardware and seeing it do more
