Remember that the VW has a 15" wheel. Which is generally unheard of in a car of that size and weight. The large wheel/drum size means more braking surface than cars with 13" wheels. Meaning that reasonably well maintained stock brakes are up to the task.

That being said, when I acquired my '73 standard I switched to disc brakes in the front. Because there was little difference in price between this upgrade and the cost of the parts to restore the front brakes. I like the discs, and have no complaints about their operation. However, I did have to play around with the rear brakes (star adjusters) to get to the point where I felt they worked best with the front discs.
