From my experience, a single-barrel carb will work fine on any
displacement engine, as long as you are not looking for "performance".
My 1984 Ford F150 has a 300 cubic inch 6 with one barrel - lots of
torque, but it won't win any races - or mileage competitions. I think
you will find also that you may get better mileage with dual single
barrels, if you don't flog it, because of better fuel delivery. There's
a reason that newer cars went from throttle-body injectors (like a carb)
to individual port injectors. You get a fair amount of fuel condensing
along the long intake runners of a stock ACWV engine, fuel that does not
get used efficiently. The 1968 - up throttle damper air pollution
control was put on to prevent this fuel from vaporizing when the
throttle is closed suddenly, creating a super-rich mixture for a little
while.
