Volks,

Yesterday I parked up my daily driven 68 bug. For quite sometime I was ignoring a noise from the rear side which grew louder. Its the typical sound that cars maek when the bearings go bad but sometimes its louder, especially on long routes. Heard in all gears as well as cruising in neutral.

A couple of days ago I went to top up the gear oil as I was fearing a low oil level starving the rear bearings. I came across the GL5 rated oil for which I had been keeping my eyes peeled since ages. I had been running GL4 oil due to non availablity.

Well, I had the old GL4 oil drained and put in GL5. The magnetic drain plugs had a bit of crud containing fine shavings which formed a glittery design when pressed between fingers. It did not FEEL gritty.

Still the noise is there as loud as ever. Also one can now actually feel vibrations inside the car coming from the floor and ever steering wheel, so I guess the bearings are on the highway to heaven.

I will be asking for your invaluable guidance here as I plan to get the whole rear suspension tweaked as its sagging at the moment along with the bearing change.

The guy at the junkyard had given me used wheel bearings claiming they were superior to the ones available brand new.....said to be Japanese. Have both those and brand new in stock with me. Interestingly the junkyard bearings are made in England. I am sure VW used German ones??? Or did they??

Waiting for your input on this.
