If the welder is careful, this should be no problem. Heliarc is the 
proper method for alloys.

Older VW blocks were magnesium alloy - weldable with heliarc, but you 
have to be careful not to get the case too hot - or it will light off 
like a BIG road flare. Newer blocks are aluminum alloy - not sure when 
they switched over, but it was somewhere in the 1960's or early '70's.
