Hello volks!
Have been out of sight for a few days now since it was festive season in
this part of the world.
Back to our topic. Thanks for everyones input on this.
I hauled the engine and gearbox home a few days ago. Could not get to
research the couple of leads I had regarding welding the case. Since this is a
spare motor I wont be doing much in this regard at least till I have my hands
full with other VW related engagements!
Inspected the motor at home. Havent taken the oil cooler off yet but can
see clearly that the break rather than crack extends thru the rear oil passage.
Bad news indeed.
Full flowing the case would be a good option as Marc says but then parts
for such a job are nonexistent in Pakistan.
The case is an 'E' series 1300cc unit. Here in Pakistan we got small
capacity 1200 and 1300 cars. 1500 and later 1600 examples were rare given the
high fuel prices then and now compared to the USA.
I was very happy to get my hands on this particular unit since it would
have served an 'off the shelf' replacement unit for any of my bugs which had
any kind of engine issue anytime. Would have made it possible to bring a car
back to the road in a matter of hours. This was not meant to be repaired or
tinkered on.
I discussed the matter with an old timer who also gave me the option of
repairing the case either by using a custom made piece of sheetmetal designed
to hold the oil cooler in place (would not work since the break runs thru the
oil passage.....at that time that was not known to me) OR the other option is
to repair the case using something we have available locally. Its a very tough
'bandaid' solution to any problem under the sun. Its something like Araldite
but only a lot tougher. Its made in Pakistan and very popular with mechanics
given its versatility and immense potential of use. Known as 'Magic Epoxy
Steel' it just might be a solution to my problem.
Would think of which way to go soon. Would prefer welding if done
reliably, otherwise might try the bandaid solution at least till the time the
engine sits in storage.
While typing this out I just came up with something on the www. Take a
look:
www.epoxy.com.pk/steel/htm
Best regards.
