Ah thanks for the correction Glen.  I thought he was running an alternator 
and so I envisioning all things pertaining to alternators.

Well then you're right Glen - if there is a problem with the generator, he 
needs to keep mind that generators only charge at around 3000 rpm and above 
so extended city driving at lower rpms won't do much for you.  Checking the 
voltage coming out of the regulator is key here.  If it's charging, then I 
agree with the shorted cell.  I dealt with one in my bus for 18 months 
including starting my engine with a wire back by the battery (remember those 
days? :)) until I actually put a meter on it and found 11.x volts.  A new 
battery took care of the problem and I even had a warranty on the old one so 
I got a replacement for free!

Anyway, if the voltage regulator is working, then suspect is the battery. 
If the voltage regulator is not working, then it's either the regulator or 
the generator.  What should the output be Glen on an unregulated generator 
at 3000 rpm or above?
