Yes its a non VW unit,

When we purchased the bug it was already there. A single larger belt drove
the three pulleys, with a decreased area of contact on the original generator
pulley which drove the fan only. Back in those good old days (some ten years
ago) not many local VWs were being scrapped, so post 73 alternators were hard
to come by. Now with even cherry bugs being hacked left right n centre, we can
get the units easily.

At the time of engine overhaul, the original generator pulley rear half
was modified to accept another belt. This drove the second non VW unit which
was piggy backing the faulty/shot original with a custom made bracket welded
on. A small belt (19 inch only) drove the non VW unit now. The downsides are
only that the original generators bearings dont last as long as they normally
would and that the 19 inch belt is not very long lasting either. However, the
overheating tendency of the engine was done away with, our primary aim.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Asad.
