He's actually running a non-VW alternator. It is in his first post about this. Extra pulleys and belts to make it , and a separate cooling fan mount, both spin.
And, the output of an unregulated GENERATOR goes up to 30+ VDC. Quite a fascinating experience when it's a dark night and one's headlights and dash lights suddenly become flashbulbs. FLASH!!!
