The `65s are the best 40HP heads made, if they're in
good condition they'd be my first choice. If you do
need to use the long-rocker-stud heads, install
conversion kits and they'll be OK too (with the
conversion kits you can adjust the lash to ~.006",
same as the later heads).
Why do you think extra piston deck or semi-hemi
cutting will be needed? The stock 40HP C.R. is plenty
conservative, will run fine on the cheapest gas
around.
CC the heads and measure the piston deck to be sure,
but even if the deck is as low as .050" with 40cc
chambers you'll still be under 7½:1....I expect you'll
find it more like 7:1 with the stock 77mm bore, it's
only if you go to big-bore (83mm) pistons that it's
likely to be an issue.
Besides the head-stud length there are also subtle
differences in the pushrod length and rocker block
dimensions, stuff you may need to deal with to get the
rockerarm geometry right on any engine but more likely
to be an issue when building a 40HP out of assorted
parts. I'd try to use the `65-up 1.1:1 rockerarms
rather than the older 1:1 items.
