Good advice Dan.

Now that it's not needed for daily transportation I'm going to do a
compression check to determine the condition of the rings. I don't
know what's wrong (if anything) with the engine. I do know that its
got many tough miles since I've owned it with my daughter using it at
college in San Antonio and then in El Paso.

How much play should there be when I pull on the crank pulley fore and
aft? If it's too much wouldn't this indicate the need for an align
bore and new bearings and possibly a crank?

The heads will definitely be rebuilt or replaced but before I pay for
a new long block or have this one rebuilt I want to be sure it's needed.

I haven't heard anyone from the east or southeast speak up about a
reputable machine shop that knows VW air-cooled engines. I'm willing
to travel to have it done right. CA may be a stretch though.

Thanks to all.
