Proper align-bores are done by Rimco in California. I've had several done, and have had very good luck with their work.

If you want to retain the original case from an older car, it's the only way to go. I had them do the line-bore, even up the cylinder seating surfaces, and drill for a full-flow oil filter for my '67 original case - it's run over 15,000 miles flawlessly since. They also balanced the counterweighted 69mm crank and 8-dowel flywheel, welded and balanced the fan and matched the piston and con rod weights. Smoothest VW motor I've ever run. I'm using 87mm forged pistons - the largest I could fit without modifying the heads and case bores. It runs a rejetted 30 PICT on a stock manifold and exhaust, and looks stock, but pulls real nice off the line.

If the cylinders don't have a horrible ridge at the top, they hone up real nice. I've done quite a few rebuilds with original pistons and cylinders and never had an oil burning problem. If the compression checks out OK, the oil problem might be valve guides, not piston rings. If the oil pressure is good, the lower end is probably OK, and I wouldn't split the case. The engine in my '69 Ghia had good pressure but burned oil - I replaced the rings and had the heads done, and it's run fine for ten years now.

Nick,
Before you rip apart the engine you might want to do a few
diagnostics, oil pressure, compression. Sounds like the rings are
worn though.

I think the general opinion regarding align-bore is that it is not
worth it because no one does it correctly on a type 1 case. If you
have low oil pressure and you can source a new case that is the way I
would go. If the pistons and cylinders are original you might want to
have the cylinders honed and install new rings. For heads there are a
few good places that restore them to better then new condition. A.J.
Sims (lowbudget), or Len Hoffman (HAM).

With my daughter off to grad school, I now have some time with her '74
Standard Bug to repaint and reseal. Part of this time will be to
rebuild or replace which is to my knowledge the original 1600 DP which
still runs quite well but burns oil and has an unknown number of miles.

My question is about having this original case line-bored and the
pistons/jugs replaced and heads rebuilt or buying a long block with a
new case. With the limited number of mile that will probably be put
on this car after the refurbishment, I'm thinking a rebuild may be the
wisest choice.

If I decide to rebuild, does anyone know a reputable place in the VA,
MD, NC area of the country? Recommend a place for a long block?
