I've just spent the past month underneath the front end of a 1999 Ford Contour I bought a couple of years ago and these cars are just pathetic. It's sooooo hard to get anything done and it leaves me worn out and feeling like such a pawn in the new-car do-what-the-man-say machine. Even though I bought the car used and it's served me well, I've just decided that I'm gonna sell it and work towards converting a small fleet of VWs that my wife and I can drive year round. I'm just sick of not having any room to work when this car needs repairs. All the young bucks at the auto parts store call this an old car. I drive a 1974 Super Beetle and a 1967 bus and can get lotsa parts off the shelf for the beetle. In just 11 years, there have been enough Contours junked that I'm really beginning to wonder if it's safe to even hang on to this car. It was made disposable. :(
Now in this climate, we have snow and we have salt. We also have lotsa cold so what I'm thinking of doing is by starting to resrore a couple of IRS pans and get them undercoated. Then I can get the shells done too. Not looking for trailer queens but but figured if I can go through what parts I have here and get them all repaired and then undercoated, then I'll have a supply of parts to keep my forever cars going. It's quite a decision to go 100% air-cooled which is what I'd like to do but I think Enid and I can pull it off.
