My guess would be the grease getting hard due to cold temps.
I would use caution if spraying from behind or thru bulb access areas, cuz your
going to make a big o'mess!

Subject: [vintagvw] Whining speedometer

Volks,

As the temperature dropped, there arose a loud "singing" or rattly whine from
the speedometer in my '70 bug. Since getting access to the speedometer's
backside is a PITA in my car (lots of siren relays, cables, flashers, etc.,
ahead of it) I'm trying to see what I'm in for. The whine increases in
frequency and loudness with increasing speed, and drops to silent when I'm
under, say, about 5 mph.

Is it probably a (a) cable problem, requiring replacement of the cable, (b)
cable housing problem (maybe a little lubricant squirted down the cable
jacket?), or (c) a problem inside the speedometer itself (a Euro km/h unit)?

Any advice before I begin digging?

Bert Knupp

PS - I've set up a FaceBook page for the Copbug itself. You can check it out
under "Copbug Polizeikäfer" and browse through the photo albums. I'm not
accepting "Friends" for it so I can control what gets posted. bk
