Had the same thing happen on my '66 convertible, although mine wasn't temperature related. One day it started making noise. Changed the cable and no difference. Then the speedo started jumping around, and then maybe a day or two later just stopped working. Picked up a temporary speedo at the last Bugorama to install while I send mine away to get fixed.

Since getting access to the speedometer’s backside is a PITA in my car (lots of siren relays, cables, flashers, etc., ahead of it) I’m trying to see what I’m in for. The whine increases in frequency and loudness with increasing speed, and drops to silent when I’m under, say, about 5 mph. Is it probably a (a) cable problem, requiring replacement of the cable, (b) cable housing problem (maybe a little lubricant squirted down the cable jacket?), or (c) a problem inside the speedometer itself (a Euro km/h unit)?
