That is not what we thought it to be.

      It is in fact a brass bushing used to keep the rod (the hockey stick) 
securely in place. It is new since your trans was probably newly rebuilt.

      The bushing stays there. Please do not do anything to it except maybe for 
some lubrication. Can anyone suggest what is the best lubricant for this area??

I probably shouldn't have said "shift rod" I meant the rod that stick our of 
the front of the transaxle, the aforementioned hockey stick.
Here is a small pic (138 KB).
It looks temporary to me, but I never took my transaxle out before and don't 
want to do anything I'll regret.
