the plastic is to protect during shipping. shift rod is not included with a rebuilt trans.

That rod is thinner too, so may not accept the bushing due to a loose sloppy fit. The shift rod bushing would go on the long shift rod lever. I do not think that this longish piece (approx 3 foot in length I believe??) would be included with any rebuilt trans. I guess the plastic part is for protection during shipping only. That said, I think it prudent to post a snap for all to see before you go around removing anything. Best of luck, Asad.
