if bit is brass then it has been machined to eliminate sloppy hole. unless it is brass with a rubber seal like 67 and newer trans.

It is in fact a brass bushing used to keep the rod (the hockey stick) securely in place. It is new since your trans was probably newly rebuilt. The bushing stays there. Here is a small pic (138 KB). It looks temporary to me, but I never took my transaxle out before and don't want to do anything I'll regret. Thanks.
