Does the mail app even open, or are you still on the home screen? If it opens, go to the bottom of the screen with a four-finger tap near the bottom of the screen, then flick left until you find the refresh button and double tap it. See if this fetches the mail. Maybe your mail isn't set to be checked automatically?
If mail is fetched successfully, head to Settings, Mail/Contacts/Calendars, and then choose the button labelled Fetch new Data, push. Here, review the scheduling settings and make sure mail is in fact set to be checked automatically. Let us know how it goes or if you need any further details on any of this.
