This is going to sound like a stupid question, but do you have multiple email accounts on your iPhone? I do, and inevitably, I always forget to check one or another of them, so I'm being notified that I have unread mail, and I do, but I think I don't, because I've forgotten to check one of my four mailboxes. Of course, this could just be an iOS 9 but in particular, and I'm barking up the wrong tree.
